Tracy Stout Powers
Established in 2014, the Colton Stout Memorial Scholarship was created to help selected students obtain their EMT Advanced Certification in my son, Colton Alexander Stout’s, memory. For these students, who have chosen a noble path of public service, your contribution is confirmation that everyday offers an opportunity to change someone’s life for the better.
Colton recognized the significance and obligation of his profession. It defined his life and played a positive role in the lives of others. He served admirably as an EMT-IV with Campbell County EMS, was a proud member of the Anderson County Rescue Squad, as well as a firefighter with Marlow Volunteer Fire Department. Helping others was vitally important to Colton, and it is our mission to carry on his commitment to helping others by awarding scholarships each year to individuals who share similar goals of service and purpose. Last year, a fireman with the Clinton Fire Department was the recipient of the first scholarship we awarded.
Many of you knew Colton as a friend and brother. His partner and friend in Campbell County had this to say about Colton:
“He was very accepting of other people’s beliefs and ideas. He wouldn’t put someone down for things like addiction or being in prison/jail for whatever reason. He treated everyone the same, with respect. If he was trying to put an IV in and saw track marks, he wouldn’t make them feel less of a person because of it, he didn’t try to embarrass them. He seemed like he didn’t let things like that get in the way of him thinking someone was still a good person.”
Those are the same qualities I would look for in an applicant.
